Feature Twenty Questions: Final Fantasy XIII - Chapter 10 Sam's avatar

Don't look down!
Having broken the Guinness World Record for the longest amount of time holding up on the analogue stick, I arrived at the end of Chapter 10 of Final Fantasy XIII in a state of improved enlightenment. Being both a gentleman and a philanthropist, attempting to convey some of my new found knowledge to the unwashed proletariat is a service I am only too happy to offer. Today's Twenty Questions touches subjects ranging from the difficulty of the game to the cheeriness of the cast because let's face it, after the length of wait for this Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix have a lot to answer for.

I had a cat called lightning once
It’s been a long straight road over the last 12 or so hours of my continued playthrough of Final Fantasy XIII, but I’m still as eager to play more of it as I ever always. It is a bit strange when you stop to think that all the game really boils down is running down a road and fighting the 5-10 fights needed to make it to the next cutscene. You occasionally stop to fiddle with your Crystarium or upgrade some weapons, but those seem pretty linear too. Any time I start trying to describe the things in this game it sound boring, but it’s somehow not actually boring to play. Let’s see how boring I can make all this stuff sound.

Sazh
Considering how slowly the game gives you elements of the battle system and pace at which you are taught when and why you might want to use the various options, I think Chapter 4 is the point where you really get good idea of how the game works. According to the clock I'm 12 hours and 6 minutes into the game, so still would be barely out of Midgar if this were Final Fantasy VII.

Read on for a summary of my thoughts based on as much time spent with the game as the entireity of most games.

The journals
[mostly damaged section] ... is why Yakuza 2 is one of the greatest games ever. Anyway, with that out of the way. I've finally got around to playing some new stuff... like Yakuza 3! Just kidding, all I've done in that so far is install it, and watch the plot summary videos of the first two games. They ingeniously get around the problem of the PS2 footage being low resolution by making the video window tiny. The 25 minute summary of Yakuza 2 seemed to make the game seem substantially more boring than it was to play it for 30 hours by focusing on the least interesting thing about it, the love interest. Look forward to more inevitable coverage of this soon.

Also, I just got a mail saying that my dubious import copy of Yakuza Kenzan has just been shipped. The confirmation mail was pretty vague about the exact delivery time-frame, and didn't even seem to be sure if it would ever turn up, which is always a good sign.

I've also played the first hour and a bit of God of War 3 and the demo of Splinter Cell: Conviction. So naturally I'm here to talk about...

Dear Diary
Dear Diary,

Final Fantasy XIII needs to give me a little more breathing room.

Following the serious concerns that I've had with Final Fantasy XIII's combat system over the last week, I was hoping to be able to spend some quality time on the battlefields of Cocoon to see whether my initial feelings were justified outside of the first few hours of the game. Unfortunately, this aspiration was scuppered shortly after getting back into the action as Square Enix continued to bombard me with new character development systems before I've had a chance to consolidate my thoughts about the existing procedures.

Dear Diary
Dear Diary,

Final Fantasy XIII has given me too much, too soon and too little, too late.

I can't believe that it was only two days ago that I was waxing lyrical about Final Fantasy XIII's combat system. Since then I've put all my other games on hold and focused on Square Enix's new role-playing game in order to make some serious headway before God Of War III demands my attention next Friday. During this period, I've walked down a couple of very long roads, watched some extremely beautiful cut scenes and started to notice the cracks in the combat system.

I'm finding it hard to summarise exactly how I feel about the few dozen battles I've taken part in so far, but the word that keeps popping to the tip of my tongue is 'messy'. My inner nerd really relishes the number crunching element of RPGs and unfortunately there's something about the combat in Final Fantasy XIII that feels more Quorn burger than a Double Quarter Pounder.

Dear Diary
Dear Diary,

I've forgiven Mass Effect 2 for the events of last week.

It's truly amazing the difference a couple of days can make. After my well documented disappointment with Bioware's crew member selection system for the finale of Mass Effect 2 last week, not to mention the associated rage quitting that took place, I picked the game up again, sat through the cut scenes, made some more educated choices and finally got through the first section of the mission without anyone dying.
