Dragon Age: Awakenings is a strange one. Containing too many new quests to be offered as downloadable content but lacking the scope to be released as a full sequel, Bioware's latest instalment of role playing action is probably best described as an expansion pack. Providing owners of Dragon Age: Origins with a host of new specialisations, spells and talents, players will again venture into the world of Tedas in order to aid with the revival of the Grey Wardens and their investigation into why the Darkspawn weren't on the first bus home.
Regardless of whether you are a PC devotee, a Xbox 360 aficionado or a PlayStation 3 fanatic, any true Dragon Age stalwarts will be interested in the subject matter of today's Thankless Answer as it's a topic close to everyone's heart. Money money money.

Dear Diary,
Final Fantasy XIII needs to give me a little more breathing room.
Following the serious concerns that I've had with Final Fantasy XIII's combat system over the last week, I was hoping to be able to spend some quality time on the battlefields of Cocoon to see whether my initial feelings were justified outside of the first few hours of the game. Unfortunately, this aspiration was scuppered shortly after getting back into the action as Square Enix continued to bombard me with new character development systems before I've had a chance to consolidate my thoughts about the existing procedures.

As I continue to reacquaint myself with World Of Warcraft after a six month sabbatical, I find myself taking an inevitable trip down memory lane and reliving my experiences with the game in the weeks and months following its initial release. The 'Classic' edition of WoW had a very different feel to it due to third party add-ons severely hamstrung by a rudimentary API, a more determined attempt by Blizzard to stop patches from being data-mined and the absence of in-game aids such as the quest tracker. These were they days when Thottbot was king and Wowhead was just a glint in the milkman's eye.
I'm sure it will shock and appal a lot of players who have only recently joined the WoW community that due to these factors, general chat was often the best place to obtain quest information. What was the same back good old days though is the amount of people who can't be bothered to read their quest log properly and nowhere was this more evidence than the now infamous Barrens chat. One quest in particular, 'Lost In Battle' was the source of more than its fair share of queries and the specific question that kept cropping up time and time again was the same as the one tackled in today's Thankless Answer.

Dear Diary,
Despite getting too comfortable with World Of Warcraft, future prospects look pale in comparison.
Coping with World of Warcraft using only the default interface has proved to be much less of a chore than I would have predicted. Now over a week into my renaissance with the game I've found that actually, you don't need a myriad of add-ons pumping statistics out of every orifice to function efficiently. Of course, there are a select few interface upgrades that would undoubtedly allow me shave seconds off more complex functions, but in my current frame of mind, I'm more than happy to trade perfection for the tedium of setting up the add-ons. As long as I can follow my Hunter shot priorities well enough to pull my weight in groups, I'm happy with my virgin setup.

Review: Plants Vs. Zombies (iPhone)

PopCap Games like their statistics and who can blame them when they include such figures as one copy bought every 4.3 seconds, fifty million units sold and one of the top ten best selling games of all time. The latest feather in the cap for the Seattle based developers arrived courtesy of Plants Vs. Zombies on the iPhone, which after shifting over 300,000 copies in the first nine days following its release, became the fastest ever selling product on the App Store.
Although a few weeks late to the party, these impressive statistics were persuasive enough to ensure that I downloaded the "Flower Defence" application, a tag-line that strongly suggests that the game was designed around a pun one of the developers came up with while on the toilet one morning. As a fan of PopCap's back catalogue and zombies but cynical about the iPhone as a gaming platform and indifferent to tower defence, my feelings on the application were mixed even before I launched it for the first time.
Is Plants Vs. Zombies the perfect mobile gaming brain food or does the "Flower Defence" application threaten to soil PopCap's reputation?

Dear Diary,
Heavy Rain is making me reconsider everything I've ever known about video games.
In between Final Fantasy XIII sessions, I've been managing to find a few hours here and there to sit down and start playing Heavy Rain in earnest. Sadly, it seems that to enjoy Quantic Dream's game as intended, I'm going to have to teach myself how to play an interactive drama as I've already started to worry that I'm missing something vitally important when I accidentally trigger new chapters before I've exhausted all the possible places to explore. One of these days I'm just going to have to accept that I'm supposed to live with the repercussions of my decisions and that I'm not supposed to experience everything in a single play through with games following a choice oriented philosophy.

Bodycount: The New Black?
By

Tue 09 Mar 2010

Codemasters are back in Black. Stuart Black that is, who has today been announced as the Creative Director of a new "genre defining" FPS game from the Guildford based studio. Arriving amid an self-proclaimed orgy of bullets and destruction in Q1 of 2011, Bodycount will have players working for an organisation known only as the 'Network' and tasked with eliminating enemy 'Targets'. It probably goes without saying that the game will support multiplayer action on a single console and online for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Bodycount will utilise Codemaster's EGO engine, traditionally featured in the developer's array of driving simulators, which will allow players to "shred" the environment with bullets and allow complete destruction of the game world. Stuart Black's last game, the eponymously named 'Black' was released by Criterion on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in early 2006, receiving a good reception from a number of publications. It is now also available on the Xbox 360 as part of the Originals downloads service.
Will Bodycount strike a body blow to traditional first-person shooters or are Codemasters counting their chickens before they're hatched?

Dear Diary,
I know I said I'd never go back to World Of Warcraft, but we’re back together.
Following the rather monotonous process of installing Windows 7 and backing up the irreplaceable bits and bobs I’ve collected from the Internet in from the last five years, I finally made true on my promise to reinstall World Of Warcraft on my ageing desktop machine. Surprisingly, Blizzard have fine tuned the procedure into a rather pleasant affair, with few hoops to jump through in comparison to previous incarnations.
