Rumour: Gears Of War 3 Not Coming Till April 2011! Ian's avatar

Markoos
A 'trusted' source told uk based Edge that Epic's Gears of War 3 will not be out this year as expected, but will instead have an early April 2011 release date. There is apparently also a trailer due to be revealed on April 8th of this year. The source lays out some very basic things about Gears of War 3, including the fact that it will apparently continue the story of the war against the Locust from the previous two games, which is news to no-one and probably only mentioned to bulk out the leak a bit.

The apparent reason for this delay is that Microsoft want to keep Q4 clear for Halo Reach and their inevitable Natal push. This makes it sound like the Gears of War 3 could be ready for Q4 if they want it to come out then. Of course none of this is official information. The first part will be verifiable when April 8th rolls by and a trailer does or doesn't get released.

Given the stunning revelation that Gears 3 will continue the story of humanity's fight against the Locust, being an industry inside seems like something I could probably do convincingly. In fact I'll give it a go right now. Here are some deep industry secrets about Gears of War 3:

  • In Gears of War 3 you will shoot enemies with bullets.
  • Your main character will be called either 'Mark' or 'Markus'.
  • At some point you during the game you will hide behind cover.
  • You will have access to a gun with a chainsaw on or near it.
  • Shooting enemies in the head will do more damage to them.
Breaking news, ladies and gentlemen.

There are a couple of weird things about this to me. Firstly I don't think that Gears of War and Halo necessarily will step on each others toes, other than being broadly defined as 'hardcore shooters' it's not like the play particularly similarly or anything. Halo fans will buy anything Halo related regardless of when it's released, and I imagine most Gears fans would do the same. I think a couple of months separation between these releases is the maximum needed for whoever they are worried about not buying both to get bored and need another game again.

Microsoft could be staring too hard into their crystal ball and predicting a quiet Q2 next year that they wish to dominate. Q1 has been completely mental this year, so maybe they want to start putting their large games down in guaranteed quiet parts of the year. Also, if all this is true I'm not sure why they'd pick this April to release a trailer for a game not out till next April. If they have to do a year long marketing cycle, wouldn't it make more sense to do an E3 reveal?
