Picture of Hotel Japanese gaming magazine bastion of weird review metrics Famitsu reports to us via and joystiq. that the oft requested Final Fantasy 7 remake is still not happening. To be more precise, in an interview with Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura the man behind a large proportion of later Final Fantasy games said "Fans are looking forward to an oft rumored remake of FFVII, but I don't believe this will happen for the time being. However, it's possible that he will appear in other titles as a guest character."

Considering how very many Final Fantasy 13 FABULA NOVA CRYSTALLIS games Square are currently claiming to be working on, I'm not really that surprised. If they aren't going to devote a significant amount of time to getting this particular remake exactly right, then they probably shouldn't bother. The internet backlash would be legendary...

When they released the original FF7 on PSN recently, I went and bought if the first moment it was available. Playing it now only reiterates how much a remake is needed. Like most early polygonal games, it has aged really poorly. Infact it runs considerably worse than the dodgy PC port that I played back in 1998. It's a good job it's not an action sensitive game otherwise I would wonder how anyone ever played it like this, and it was definitely the framerate that made me turn it off and thing "Nah, I'll wait for the remake". Guess that's still the plan.
