Love Letters Discovered
The Behemoth, developers of Castle Crashers have announced that their third game, previously known appropriately known as "Game 3" is called BattleBlock Theatre. I don't think I can really describe in words what this game as about, so here's a trailer that will use moving images and sound to explain it for me. Neat. I agree that although Castle Crashers had a really unique feel to it and a gorgeous minimalistic look, it was just a little bit to repetitive to win over my body and soul. The mechanics do look interesting and I hope there are new ones for each play rather than just different variations. It also seems to imply that co-operative play will be more important than in their last venture, where you were essentially just fighting alongside each other with little interactivity.
I have to say though that the levels look pretty damn sterile and it comes across as some weird nursery version of Super Mario World 1-1 rather than anything to do with a play. I guess from the concept introduction I was hoping for something more along the lines of a 2D co-op version of American McGee's Grimm but I'll give it a chance as these first look videos can often be misleading.
I really love the Behemoth aesthetic they've made for their games. It's true that it does look like a flash animation, but there ain't nothing wrong with that. Castle Crashers was a fine looking game too, but unfortunately I didn't really have a lot of fun playing it. Brawlers just don't really do it for me any more. If you ask me if I want to play some Streets of Rage 2 with you, my answer will be "Why certainly! I shall put the kettle on!", but I haven't enjoyed a new one pretty much since Streets of Rage 2.
This game looks like it has some interesting mechanics, and I still don't really understand what the core gameplay even after watching that trailer twice. I just hope that everyone weeps constantly, because the trailer certainly implies they will.
